Mining Program

Funzeleo’s Mining Program benefits secondary students and their teachers. This experiential program consists of a Student Workbook and a Teacher’s Guide. The Student Workbook provides relevant problem-based activities to help build critical thinking and increase the students’ awareness about minerals, geology, rocks and professions available in the mining sector. Topics in the Student Workbook include mineral properties, velocity/density/mass, natural resources and the environment. Relevant math activities are embedded in each of these topics. The students receiving the Mining Program will also participate in field trips and job-shadow with experienced mentors. As a result of receiving this program, students will:

  • Have increased curiosity and greater understanding and appreciation of the economic benefits of mineral and other natural resources.
  • Be more aware of the skills and level of education required to succeed in various careers opportunities in the mining sector. Students will have access to adult mentors to help them build the skills and experiences necessary to work as technicians, geologists, geophysicists, engineers, and other technical professions.
  • Be best prepared to pursue further education in the physical sciences or enter a technical field after secondary school.
  • Improve communication and interpersonal relationship as they work with peers and adults to solve real-world problems as part of their science projects

On the other hand, the Teacher’s Guide introduces educators to new concepts and techniques for designing instruction in a way that engages and excites students about STEM. Before receiving their classroom resources, teachers will attend professional development. As part of their training, teachers will complete “True Colours,” VARK, and other personality assessments to help them understand their teaching styles and their impact on students’ learning and academic achievement. Also, we will introduce teachers to the science fair and how to implement it successfully in their schools.
