In October 2023, the College of Natural and Applied Sciences at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, hosted 261 form-six students from Kisutu Girls Secondary School for a day-long tour, with the goal of exposing these students to the many academic and career opportunities available to them in the sciences.
The students were given examples of undergraduate programs including Bachelor of Science in molecular biology and biotechnology, applied zoology, wildlife science and conservation, botanical science, microbiology etc. But also expert gave them examples of different careers that students can end up accomplishing like research scientists, pharmacologist, microbiologist, biomedical scientist, wildlife biologist, food and drugs officer and environmental officer.
This tour came at a crucial time in their lives, as these students are in their final year of secondary education, when they must decide whether to enter the job market or continue with higher education. Accordingly, it was essential that the students hear from faculty, administrators, and college students close to their age regarding the academic requirements for admission into this institution. This tour provided the students with an array of options to consider, both during their final year of secondary education, and upon graduation.
