our mining program

We prepare students for mining careers through hands-on learning.

Funzeleo’s mining curriculum is an experiential program that provides relevant problem-based activities to help build critical thinking and increase student awareness about minerals, geology, rocks and professions in the mining sector.

Why invest in mining education in Africa?

#1

Africa is the #1 global producer of platinum, phosphate, gold, chromium, vanadium, cobalt and diamonds, resources that are taken out of Africa without any value added to the countries they are found.

#2

If fully understood and properly exploited, African minerals would form the essential foundation for an industrial revolution.

#3

While the need for Africa-trained mining and geophysics experts is dire, UNESCO noted that mining and geology are not being taught to students in African schools.

#4

How our mining program works

Student Program

Students learn about mineral properties, velocity/density/mass, natural resources and the environment, along with relevant math activities. The students in the mining program also participate in field trips and job-shadow with experienced mentors. The goals of this program are for students to:

  • Have increased curiosity and greater understanding and appreciation of the economic benefits of mineral and other natural resources.
  • Be more aware of the skills and level of education required to succeed in various career opportunities in the mining sector. Students will have access to adult mentors to help them build the skills and experiences necessary to work as technicians, geologists, geophysicists, engineers, and other technical professions.
  • Be prepared to pursue further education in the physical sciences or enter a technical field after secondary school.
  • Improve communication and interpersonal relationship as they work with peers and adults to solve real-world problems as part of their science projects

Teacher Training

We introduce educators to new concepts and techniques for designing instruction in a way that engages and excites students. Before receiving their classroom resources, teachers attend professional development. As part of their training, teachers will complete “True Colours,” VARK, and other personality assessments to help them understand their teaching styles and their impact on students’ learning and academic achievement. We also train teachers to successfully implement science fairs in their schools.
